How to uninstall avg 2011 from windows 7?

Sometimes the Uninstaller for AVG Anti-virus 2011 fails to work in Add/Remove programs AVG uninstaller or the AVG uninstaller shortcut in the AVG sub-menu in Windows start menu in Windows taskbar, and you can’t uninstall AVG which happened to me while trying to uninstall AVG 2011 antivirus with the regular AVG 2011 antivirus uninstaller which came bundled with AVG 2011 Free antivirus when I installed it on Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.

AVG has a standalone uninstaller program for AVG 2011 which will work for uninstalling AVG 2011 if your computers AVG 2011 uninstaller which comes with AVG fails to uninstalls AVG 2011.

I used AVG uninstaller program called avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1184.exe for Windows 32bit Operating System which completely deleted AVG’s files, programs, services, and registry keys off my computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit.

AVG remover is available for both 32bit and 64bit versions of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.

AVG_Remover will automatically remove all of AVG files, settings, and Registry files made by AVG when you run avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1184.exe by double clicking on it with your mouse

A black command prompt/MS-Dos program will show up when I click on the AVG_Remover file. You should be logged in with an Administrator Windows user account before running AVG_Remover, or Windows might not let you run it. If you use Windows 7 or Vista, you need to accept the UAC/pop-up windows before the AVG complete install can begin.

When AVG_Remover is done uninstalling AVG, it will make a log file called AVG remover on your desktop.

Make sure to download the right version of AVG for your computer. If you use a 32bit Windows operating system like Windows XP Home or 7 Home Premium 32bit, download the 32bit of AVG Remover version. But, if you use a 64bit Windows operating system like Windows 7 Professional 64bit, download the 64bit version of AVG Remover.

I recommend you only download the AVG antivirus uninstaller from the AVG official site since there are some fake AVG antivirus uninstaller programs which are actually virus, spyware, and malware program which will infect your computer instead of uninstalling AVG 2011 antivirus from your computer.

Tip: if you have another antivirus installed before uninstalling AVG, disable or uninstall your antivirus before running AVG Remover, so it won’t block AVG remover from removing AVG 2011 uninstall task. Some 3rd party firewall software like Comodo might also block the AVG 2011 uninstall process from running, so you should temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall software before you uninstall AVG 2011 with the AVG remover program.

After you uninstall AVG 2011. Restart your computer. After you restarted your computer, you should install an Antivirus like AVG 2012, Microsoft Security Essentials, Comodo Anti-virus, Avast, Avira AntiVir, or Norton on your computer with an administrator Windows user account. But, only install one antivirus on your PC since having two antivirus will cause computer problems like slowness, and both antivirus become broken, and fail at protecting your computer from virus, and malware programs infecting your PC.

If any antivirus or program uninstaller fails, I recommend you read my article at johnsonyip.com/wordpress/2009/06/29/good-programs-for-helping-remove-unwanted-programs/ which recommends great software for removing failed uninstall programs.

Revo Uninstaller is also a great all-in-one uninstaller program which you can download at www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html to use to uninstall programs which have failed at uninstalling a program with the programs default bundled uninstaller.

If you want to completely remove AVG and all your old files related to other Antivirus which you installed in the past, programs, Windows, Virus and Spyware infections, and currupt registry keys, you should do a Clean install of Windows.

First, you need to backup “ALL” your “Important” files to a USB external hard drive, DVD-R blank disc, another computer connected to your network, or with a Ethernet Network Crossover cable, USB data transfer cable, etc.

Secondly, you want to gather all your software CDs and keys which did not come with your computer.

Lastly, you want to start your computer from your recovery CD or Partition if you own a computer made by Dell, HP, Acer, etc. If you built your computer yourself, you need to start your computer from your Windows install CD by leaving your disc in the CD drive during computer start up, and following the Install wizard for Windows to reinstall Windows.

Now AVG and all the non-Windows software is completely remove from Windows, and Windows has been cleaned installed. You should copy your files from your backup drive back to your computer drive, and install your antivirus like AVG 2012, and other third party software.

If you want to remove your AVG virus scanner from your system, first thing is you have to stop the current execution of AVG.Then go to control panel and remove AVG anti virus.

I agree you should stop the execution of AVG with Msconfig startup manager by going to the startup and services tabs to uncheck AVG related programs. But, sometimes even stopping AVG processes is not possible to remove AVG since the installer/uninstaller is broken or does not work.

Thank you so much for your good explanation of how to remove AVG. Because of your good details and references to other sources at AVG, I was able to discover AVG’S rescue CD features, updates, and docs too! This has me now wondering what’s best: 1) remove the “elephant” from my computer; 2) fix it and move on … Perhaps you might offer to help AVG with their customer support, which BTW is greatly lacking (smile). Thanks again Johnson!

Hi Jen, glad my tutorial is helpful for removing AVG. It’s best to use the default uninstaller for AVG which you can find at the Windows Start menu under the AVG sub-menu or Add/Remove programs.

But, if AVG fails to uninstall. Using AVG Remover(32bit) 2011 (avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322.exe) or AVG Remover(64bit) 2011 (avg_remover_stf_x64_2011_1322.exe) for 64bit Widows operating system also works if the regular uninstaller fails which happened to me once.

After you uninstalled AVG, it is best to install another antivirus. I’m currently using Avast 6 free edition which has been working great for me which you can download at avast.com/free-antivirus-download . Avast 6 seems faster and and does not crashes my computer like AVG free edition.

There are certainly lots pf steps involved when uninstalling AVG from your windows computer. Despite this difficult process i still believe that AVG is one of the best antivirus softwares.

The easiest way to do this is to delete registry keys in Windows. I found a how-to guide here:

Thanks, Steven. I agree deleting registry is probably the easiest way to “get rid of avg 2011 from your computer”. Thanks for the link on getting rid of AVG 2011 by removing registry key. Doing a System Restore to an earlier date before you installed AVG antivirus 2011 on your Windows computer might also get rid of AVG 2011 Antivirus for good from your computer running on Windows might be even more easier . I believe System Restore also restore your previous registry settings and remove keys which AVG previously added to the registry.

typical useless computer bs make something simple difficult, i do not know why this industry alaways does things the hard way, i recall about this time having to spend a eternity in a recovery centre which had the ordinary heat controls which worked fine but the computer heads decided to controlt the heat with computers and of course the rooms were like a sauna at 3 am causing great unease for people recovering from surgery etc just because of computerheads who could not leave well enough alone and of course the gut in winnipeg in summer 2010 who did not cut the power to a computerized cattle feeder and got electrocuted because the perfect computer turn on the feeder at the wrong time, most auto recall on board computer failure, how this industry gets away with producing trash i will never know

Where i can download it? Can you please help me on how to enter regedit editor and why i cannot uninstall my AVG Internet Security 2011?

Hi Rahul, you can download AVG uninstaller 2012 at http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities. I think AVG discontinued the remover for 2011. You should contact AVG at http://www.avg.com/us-en/contacts for additional help on removing AVG, but most likely they will tell you to join, and post in their forum if you are not using the paid version of AVG.

You should not use Regedit to remove AVG since using RegEdit manually can break your computer’s registry causing it not to start up, or makes things worse then it already is.

You should try a tool like Revo Uninstaller to try to move AVG 2011 if you can’t uninstall AVG 2011 with the AVG 2012 uninstaller.

AVG is worse than a virus in and of itself. I’m warning everybody I know NOT to install it under any conditions.

Thanks for the tip, Ron. I recommend Avira, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Panda Cloud Antivirus which are all free antivirus which are less bloated then AVG.

you can make it uninstall completely through using best uninstaller application like revouninstaller or mirekusoft uninstaller.

Revo Uninstaller is what I used to uninstall AVG Antivirus until I found the AVG uninstaller on AVG’s website.

the easy way to remove software is to download ccleaner, a free program.
Contained within it is a program uninstaller that deletes all remnants of a program in about 10 seconds.

I agree CCleaner is pretty good for removing unwanted software. I also used the free version of Revo Uninstaller, and Iobit uninstaller which works pretty well since they both scan for leftover folders, files, and registry keys after uninstalling the software with the software’s uninstaller program.
